This blog was formerly the web presence of the organisation of which I am currently CEO, Renew Adelaide. You can see our proper website here, with information on how we work, our current sites, applications for the use of space and overviews for property owners.
This blog is now my general blog and the views expressed, accordingly, don’t reflect those of Renew Adelaide as an organisation, any of its board members or partner organisations, nor are they intended as consultancy or advice in any way.
yes, yes, yes, this will brighten all the corners.
Sounds like a great initiative. Keep us posted about your activities and new blog entries by emailing us at adelaidetweet(at)gmail.com and we will tell people about it on twitter! We’ll also add this blog to our blogroll.
Best of Luck
I’m not a visual artist but I would be happy to help in some other capacity if time permits.
Might be able to help with various business or media stuff.
Has anybody mentioned having poets in residence in empty spaces? This would be fantastic!
Hi – I was really interested to find this via Marcus Westbury keen to see how you are faring. I am in the earth stages of trying to doing something in Canberra which has been pretty much of a wasteland of for theatre, dance and arts events for 8-9 years. I published a couple of articles about this in RealTime Iate last year (see weblink)

Hi this sounds like a fantastic idea – Adelaide is soooo creative. I used to exhibit my quirky papier mache sculptures about 7yrs ago with the Shop@rt Council initiative and they were displayed in empty Hindley Street shop fronts lit up at night – was great exposure for my art and I really enjoyed the fact that people could view it 24 hrs a day. I have only currently started doing my Papier mache sculptures after a long hiatus by exhibiting them in the 2010 Fringe Cats Exhibition.
I believe that art is a fantastic outlet for many people and would love to find a paid job (I work part time) to take classes for the underpriveleged and even the homeless . Creating Art can lift our spirits and give us a sense of accomplishment – Ive signed up for your newsletter – Thanks muchly. Lisa P. – Adelaide.
Awesome initiative. Good name too. You need some arty friends/ advocates in high places like Don Polites?? or on Adelaide City Council. If they were behind it, maybe they could sponsor it, as part of a community arts and CBD renewal exercise. They could then cover insurance etc. and invite property owners and landlords to be part of the scheme. It could work where the landlords could commit to whatever time period suited them, then the spaces were advertised to community/ arts organisations and individuals accordingly. This is the kind of thing, that needs ground rules, where both parties, commit to certain things regarding time of availability, rent and housekeeping arrangements.
Would be a good idea to talk to run a few public forums with artists and relevant stakeholders from ACC and property owners, form a committee and work from there. Or talk to the council first. Either way there has to be something in it for everyone. Good luck,

Interested in creative environmental education, communities & the arts.
G’day. Sounds like an exciting program.
I’m a fine art photographer and pretty new to Adelaide. I’ve exhibited previously in a similar initiative in Tas called Tasmanian Living Artist Week where the participants exhibit art work in shop front windows along the main streets for a few week s a year. Really livens the place up and exposes emerging artists to the community. I wonder if this kind of shop- front- window- trail would be the kind of event that Renew would be into?
Many Thanks, Meg.
Hi, I would love to be part of renewing Adelaide. I’m from Newcastle and heard about how positive it has been to artists and the community.
I’m a dancer at Australian Dance Theatre and I have been interested in look at jamming spaces in the CBD for improvisational artists from different genre’s and forms. Please keep me informed

Hi there, I think this is a fantastic idea that will work really well for Adelaide – and could definitely help to extend the ‘mad March’ cultural extravaganza throughout the rest of the year.
You can read more about the Renew Newcastle project on Creativeinnovation: http://www.creativeinnovation.net.au/Features/RENEWING-NEWCASTLE.html
This is an amazing opportunity for artists across Adelaide. It gives us all a chance to actually make our ideas and dreams into a reality.
How do I get in touch with you guys? I’d like to discuss the Adelaide West End project further.
Thanks,
Carolyne
Hi all,
You may want to take a look at this site of similar projects that have been running in the UK for a couple of years. It’s a networking/discussion site, so feel free to join up and swap ideas.
The idea behind ‘meanwhile space’ was to encourage the creative sector to lead the charge in urban (social and economic) renewal, especially at a time when so many buildings were sittig vacant due to the economic downturn. I even think that some UK councils offered discouted rates and/or cheap rents to businesses with vacant buildings to let community groups and artists display work there.
I don’t know how this could pan out in Adelaide as I’m new to the city. But it does have the right ingredients to make this work as it’s one of the most creative cities I’ve visited. Ever.
I’m all for initiatives that not only give artists an outlet for their work but also create opportunities for soical and economic regeneration. Will follow this site with interest and hope to get more involved sometime.
Meanwhile, keep up the fantastic work..
Drat! the above post didn’t print the url details. See if this works..

Can you contact me by email regarding a supplement I’m doing on Adelaide for Good Weekend magazine (published in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age). Thanks, Sally Webb
So, this is an artists’ hub then?
I’m President of Adelaide CBD’s Grote Business Precinct.
One of the guest presenters at the National Mainstreet Conference held at the National Wine Centre a couple of weeks ago presented a case study whereby an English (I think it was) town with a high vacancy level, and poor tenancy mix, needed to re-invent themselves.
They did this very creatively by Paining the Windows of the empty shops with high quality illustrations of ‘scenes’ that represented what they wanted that particular shop to be. Eg. A butcher, a baker, a candle stick maker.
This apparently worked amazingly well. Not only did it completely liven up a town looking a bit drab, it got tongues wagging, re-invigorated the local community AND did in fact attract applications from businesses matching the style of illustrations on the various shop fronts.
Not only did they attract the businesses, but the types of tenant they hoped for. Simple & effective. Plus it engaged local artists and the existing community.
Excellent!
I am looking for a venue for a weekly meeting. It’s a professionally run Language Exchange expanding from Melbourne.
Essentially we just need a space to meet once a week, and I thought that one of the Renew Adelaide spaces would be a double win. Where can I find a list of shops and SMEs in Renew Adelaide spaces? or even someone to contact about this project?
Hi there,
I found an old article about Renew Adelaide, in the one and only edition of ‘Laide’… anyway. Let me introduce myself, I am the administrator of ‘Love Adelaide’ and the editor of ‘The Villager magazine’. We’re based in Adelaide’s west end, Light Square to be exact. We have taken over the old ‘night train’ building and house our organisations in there, as well as a church and ever famous ‘The Underground’. We beleive in the precinct and the arts, businesses and culture of the area. Please make your way to our websites and check out what it is we do. We’d love to support this program in whichever way, usually through our magazine. Cheers, Emmeline. http://www.loveadelaide.com & http://www.thevillagermag.org ! You’re doing a great thing. We are open to helping emerging artists by providing an arts space.
I help run a circus skills business. We have won presentation awards, taught 500 people at once and regularly volunteer time to disadvantaged members of the community; and after our business showcased in a shopfront we would have to pack up and move out ’cause some other entrepreneur would finally see the potential in the space. Is that how we should be pitching this Renew Adelaide idea to the property managers? As a way to facilitate rent paying users faster than an empty visage would….
Should I contact/head hunt property managers myself and if I find one willing to participate in the project should I then come to you?
I heard about the project before the closing date, but at the time no one would have been available to run the space. Now that there is how do we get this ball rolling again?
